How to Raise a Respectful Child

13 June 2023 by threewords

As a parent, one of the biggest responsibilities you ever have is to raise a respectful and well-mannered child. Teaching little ones about respect helps to foster positive relationships, empathy, and a strong sense when it comes to moral values. In a world where respect can, unfortunately, be difficult to find, it has become more important than ever to instil these values in your child from as early on as possible. Below is a blog post advised by this girl’s prep school in London, on how to raise a respectful child.

Value your child’s opinion

A good way to begin the process of raising a respectful child is by valuing your child’s choices and opinions. For example, if your child wants to wear brightly-coloured clothes or unmatched socks, let them. Respecting their choices is a great way to lay the foundation for respecting others, even if they are different to their own. Similarly, if your child is requesting something that may seem silly such as playing in the cold rain, find ways to compromise and offer them an umbrella and the right gear before they do so. This doesn’t mean they are getting their own way, but you are showing your child that you respect and will honour their choices as long as they are completed in the right way.

Set the best example

Similar to the point above, raising a respectful child ultimately begins with you. Children actually pay very close attention to the acts and behaviours of the adults in their lives. This is why it is so important to model respectful behaviour in your own actions and interactions. This can be done by actively listening, using polite language, and demonstrating empathy. When problems arise, try and handle them with respect and communicate openly and calmly. In time, your child will begin to mirror your behaviour, understanding the importance of respecting others in their own interactions.

Set boundaries

When your child is little, establish clear boundaries and expectations that help them understand the importance of respect. Communicate the values and rules in your family, placing heavy emphasis and significance on treating others kindly and respectfully. Be consistent when it comes to reinforcing consequences when your child crosses any boundaries, and ensure that they understand the result of disrespectful acts.

Raising a respectful child isn’t difficult at all, it just starts with you. By setting the right example and beginning this journey from when they are little, your child will be set on the right path to becoming a good and respectful individual.
