How to Raise an Inquisitive Child

28 October 2021 by threewords

It’s important to be curious because it allows us to learn about new things. Babies are naturally curious because everything is new to them and there’s so much they want to try and understand about the world around them, but parents should try and find ways to foster this inquisitive nature as their children get older. Read on for some advice from a nursery in Harpenden.

Don’t Shut Down Your Child’s Questions

Relentless questions from your child can become frustrating, especially when you’re tired, but you should try your best not to shut them down or turn them away. Doing so will discourage them from asking questions going forward, and questions are a key element of being an inquisitive person. If you don’t know the answer, say something like “That’s a great question but I’m not sure about the answer – let’s do some research together later”, rather than “I’m too busy to think about that right now, can you go and play outside for a bit while I cook the dinner”.

Encourage Your Child to Pursue their Interests

People are naturally more curious about things that genuinely interest them, so if you want to raise an inquisitive child, you should try and encourage your child to pursue their hobbies. This doesn’t mean they have to learn three different instruments or join every sports club under the sun; even something as simple as buying them a telescope for Christmas if they have expressed an interest in space will help them pursue their interests and continue to have a thirst for knowledge.

Ask Your Child Open-Ended Questions

If your child has an opinion about something or makes a statement, encourage them to think about things on a deeper level by asking open-ended questions (i.e., questions that require more than a yes or no answer). You could say things like “That’s interesting, when/where did you learn about that?” or “What makes you think that?”. The trick is to help them think outside of the box and take their understanding one step further, which essentially boosts their inquisitiveness.

Mix Up Your Child’s Routine

Routine and structure are important for children in helping them feel secure and safe. However, every once in a while, it would be wise to throw in a curveball and mix things up so that your child can be stimulated and find new things to be curious about. This could be something as simple as visiting a new town or trying a new recipe for dinner.
