How to Pursue a Career in Fitness

22 July 2022 by threewords

Once you find a fitness plan you enjoy, your attitude and perceptions of exercise and fitness will change dramatically. This is because you’ll begin to recognize their true benefits (both mental and physical), as opposed to viewing them as a burden.

As a result, it’s hardly surprising that so many fitness lovers want to translate this passion into a full-time career. After all, the work is much more entertaining than an office job and comes with many perks. For example, exercising more frequently gives you the chance to improve your mental health or support others on their wellness journeys. As such, it’s an incredibly rewarding position.

Furthermore, as the majority of fitness jobs are freelance positions, you get much greater control over your schedule. This means that you can find more time for family activities and fun.

With that in mind, here are some top tips that you can use to pursue a career in fitness.

Consider your options. There are various different options available to you that fall under the umbrella of ‘fitness’. For example, if you spend a lot of time at the gym, you might want to become a personal trainer. This will allow you to work with a range of different clients, meaning each session will be a little different. Alternatively, you may want to train to be a class teacher for a specific sport or activity you enjoy, such as Zumba or aerobics.

Get some qualifications. Being good at a sport or activity doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be great at teaching others. This is because teaching requires a range of specific skills beyond natural aptitude. For example, you have to know how to plan and structure classes, alongside ensuring you can accommodate different fitness levels in your sessions. As such, you should also do some research ahead of time to see what qualifications are expected of you. For example, if you wanted to become a Pilates Instructor, you might want to visit ASFA so that you can obtain a pilates instructor certification. This course will not only enable you to find a job, but it will also help to expand upon your understanding of pilates exercises, methodology & routine design.

Know how to market your services. Whether you work as part of an organization or as a freelancer, marketing is key to your success within the fitness industry. After all, if potential clients cannot find you, it will be difficult for you to make money. Thankfully, there are various effective ways in which you can market your brand, from more traditional flyers to social media. Of course, social media is probably the most effective in the current climate (given that we spend so much time on our phones). Your social media pages must be the perfect blend of professional and personable. For example, you should use it to demonstrate what classes/sessions you have on offer and enhance your credibility by showing client progress or feedback. You should also ensure that you always respond to comments and messages, as this will allow you to develop a relationship with current and prospective clients.
