The Benefits of Journaling for Children

27 October 2022 by threewords

Keeping a journal is something a lot of young children will be encouraged to do. It gives them a lot more freedom with how they collect their thoughts, and it’s important to teach your child how to handle themselves. A journal also means your child is actively trying to pick up new reading and writing skills, whether they’re aware of it or not. It’s a great skill to develop in children heading to junior school or prep school.

In this guide we take a look at the big benefits you will find in asking your child to keep a journal on a regular basis.

Helps your child recognise their emotions

If a child is able to work out how they’re feeling, and what they can do to improve their management of these emotions, then they’re going to grow up more responsible and independent. This often comes from what your child is writing down in their journal; a diary or journal is able to give your child the privacy and time to express their feelings in a way that they can understand. It also teaches your child the importance of having a private place to express their feelings.

Improves a child’s writing skills

If they’re writing very often in their journal then it’s important for their writing skills to see the growth they’ve made. Having a good understanding of vocabulary, spelling and grammar will slowly help your child learn about their English writing capabilities and how it will ultimately help them in school.

Helps broaden a child’s horizons

With the ability to write down thoughts and feelings freely into a book, you’re finding that your child is more likely to understand other peoples’ feelings as well. They’re getting to understand how other people come to terms with different scenarios and it can give them the tools to learn from other people.

Helps your child open up to you more

If there’s a place for your child to open up, whether it’s to you or when they write in their journal, they’re having that chance to feel more comfortable with talking to others about their emotions. A lot can happen in a short space of time for children, and it’s important to provide your child with the platform to talk to you about any issues they’re having. It’s also important to give your child that space to work on things in their own way.
