How Do My Child’s Lifestyle Choices Impact Their Education?

7 November 2022 by threewords

There are many things that a child can do in their life that can affect the way they progress in their education. Parents should do their best to help their children perform well in school by ensuring that they have a suitable study space at home or hiring a private tutor if they need extra help with their homework or exam revision. However, one thing that is not always considered is the healthy lifestyle choices that can be made to ensure your child succeeds academically. Here is some advice from a private school in Kent on how lifestyle choices impact a child’s education.

Diet plays a huge role in many things in a child’s life, especially progressing in education. The foods that your child eats can determine whether they are able to concentrate throughout the day. Starting the day off with sugary snacks can lead to a burst of energy which is followed by a crash. It is wise to start your child’s day with a nutritious breakfast that is filling so that they are able to focus in their lessons throughout the day. Instead of offering your child sugary cereals, try offering them porridge with fruit. Dehydration is also something that can lead to sluggish behaviour. Buy your child a good reusable water bottle that they are able to use to drink throughout the day and refill when necessary. This will help them stay alert in class so that they are able to engage better with their tasks.

Exercise is an extremely important part of a child’s life. With smartphones and devices becoming increasingly popular, it means children are spending a lot more time sitting in one place and not getting enough exercise. Whilst exercise is also great for fitness, it can help with memory and attention span which is what children need when they want to perform well in school. For younger children, it helps them with their motor skills as well as their cognitive and social skills. Exercise reduces stress levels by releasing endorphins which can help children who are struggling at school with friends or subjects. Reducing stress alone can help them to focus better. If you are struggling to get your child up and about, encourage them to take part in an extracurricular activity so they have the opportunity to get out of the house and be motivated to get moving.

Sleep is also an important part of doing well in school. Not getting enough sleep can lead to the inability to concentrate well and even lead to depression. Help your child stick to a regular routine for sleep and try and keep them away from their devices late at night. Everything is done in moderation so take the first steps today.
