5 Moral Values to Explore with Your Child

2 April 2023 by threewords

All that parents want is for their children to grow up and be good people with good morals.

While there’s no right or wrong when it comes to parenting, there are a few important lessons to work on with children and traits to instil. Here are 5 that a nursery in Halstead recommends exploring.

Honesty

Honesty is a fundamental part of all relationships and is needed to trust one another. Although it’s difficult sometimes, children should be taught that telling the truth is the right thing to do. Sometimes this can be confusing when it comes to white lies and hurting others’ feelings. Ultimately, they must tread carefully based on the situation. Honesty is the best policy, but where they have nothing nice to say, children should be taught to not say anything at all.

Humility

While children should be proud of their achievements, and of course content with what they have, it’s important that they are raised humble and with humility. We’re all equal to one another and children should be taught to not look down on others. There’s lots that we can learn from each other and our life experiences make us unique.

Resilience

When problems come our way, it’s easy to chuck the towel in and give up. Getting back up is much harder to do as it means facing up to your fears and making yourself vulnerable again. However, without doing so children aren’t able to see what they’re capable of and reach their full potential. To help them build their resilience they will need to do a lot of things that make them uncomfortable and get back on their feet. You can help with this by offering motivation and words of encouragement.

Compassion

It doesn’t cost anything to be kind and it makes the world a better place. The simplest way that your child can show kindness and compassion is to smile at those around them and to treat others with the same kindness they expect to be treated with.

Accountability

Another trait to work on with your child is accountability. It teaches children to take ownership of their mistakes, better themselves and not give up when things get difficult.

As with all of these moral values, it’s important that you embody them yourself through your own actions and set a good example for your child. They look up to you as their parents, so you will need to think carefully about your behaviour and attitudes in their presence.
