5 Simple Ways to Help You Protect Your Home

We all care about our homes, and I’m sure at times we all worry that we may be burgled one day. Hopefully, it will never happen, but it’s always a good idea to keep it as protected as possible to minimise the risk, especially if you are going away.

Here are five simple things you can do to help protect your home.

• Make sure any back gates have good, secure locks on them. Someone is more likely to break into your home around the back of your house as they are less likely to be seen, so you want to do as much as you can to protect the back of your home properly.
•  Get extra keys cut and give them to close family, and ask them to check on your home if you are going to be away for long periods of time. If you don’t give them a spare set then you can occasionally end up having to leave a key in a ‘safe’ place, that may turn out to be not so safe.
• Install a burglar alarm – ok, it’s maybe not the simplest idea, but once you have done it then it is there forever, and will hopefully be an extra thing to deter burglars, and help them to get caught if they break in anyway.
• Make friends with your neighbours (if you can!) so that they look out for your house and anyone acting suspiciously around it. Different people will be at home at different times of the day so it’s good to get along well with all of your neighbours, and you can look out for them too.
• Don’t advertise it when you’re going away – don’t tell everyone you come across that you are going on holiday, however excited you are, as you don’t know who they will tell. And try not to make it obvious you are away by having curtains closed 24 hours a day. If possible get someone to come and open them in the mornings and close them at night; it helps if you have pets and someone is coming to look after them for you as they can open and close curtains, and turn lights on and off too.
