Teaching Your Child the Importance of Hard Work

22 October 2021 by threewords

We all want to raise children who are willing to work hard to succeed in life and achieve their goals, but it’s something that you have to help them with as it doesn’t come naturally to everyone. With PlayStations, iPhones, and other distractions, it’s easy to procrastinate and put off important tasks. Even adults struggle to stay motivated all the time. However, unless you instil a sense of determination and hard work in your child from a young age, they will struggle as they grow up. So, here are some tips for teaching your child the importance of hard work, from an international school in London.

Encourage Ambition

Try and find time to chat to your child on a regular basis about what they want to achieve in life, both in the short- and long-term. Encourage them to set goals and let them know that you will support them as best you can to help them achieve these goals. Teach them that every accomplishment starts with one small step.

Embrace Failure

If your child is afraid of failing, they will be afraid to try in the first place. With that said, when things go wrong, help them embrace and own their failures. For instance, if they fail a test, remind them that there will always be another opportunity to try again and do better next time. If you take the opposite approach and scold them for failing, you will knock their self-esteem.

Praise Effort

Whenever you see that your child is working hard at something, whether it’s schoolwork or a personal endeavour, let them know that you are proud of them and give them plenty of praise. The idea is to focus on the effort that goes into something rather than the outcome. For example, if they work really hard on their revision for a test but they fail the test, the fact that they tried their best is what’s important.

Encourage Independence

A lot of the time, children will refrain from putting in the required amount of effort because they know that someone will eventually do it for them. Give your child some space to figure things out on their own so that they can become more confident in their abilities and appreciate what can be achieved when you put in the effort. So, next time you feel like tidying their bedroom for them on their behalf, ask them to do it themselves. They might be more inclined to keep it tidy if they know that they’ll have to deal with the mess themselves.
