Can Travel Benefit Your Mental Health?

22 November 2022 by threewords

When you think of travel, it is easy to imagine meeting new people, sunbathing on white sands, and posting Insta-worthy pictures. The above are legitimate reasons to book a flight or hit the road, but what if you could get more from the travel? According to a UK study, one in five people experiences some form of mental illness every year. The idea of taking a travel break in today’s high-pressure and tight social schedules may be inconceivable, but the mental health benefits below could make you rethink.

Source

  1. Travelling makes you happier

Perhaps you usually have pizza for breakfast, relax on your couch and watch your favourite TV show when you have a day off or don’t need to go to work. However, travelling offers a great escape from the usual daily routine. New experiences and events assist in reorganising your brain and boosting your mood and self-confidence. Generally, humans aren’t designed to live their entire life in one area. This is because it is easy to feel trapped when you stay in the same area for an extended period without being able to move about and explore. Life feels more fulfilling when you spend more time seeing more places and countries and having unique experiences.

  1. Enjoy good stress relief

According to the American Psychological Association, stress is an unavoidable component of living. However, long-term or chronic stress can have a harmful influence on both your mental and physical health. Short or long, vacationing will greatly reduce or eliminate stress. Looking forward to a scheduled trip might help make you feel more relaxed. Stressed people generally have a lot going on in their heads and struggle to connect with the present. Some travel destinations, including Italy, Australia, and the Netherlands, allow you to become more aware of your surroundings and build stronger connections with the people. You can also consider these stress-relieving things to do in Amsterdam on your next travel.

  1. It makes you more creative

Travel can help you get back to your best when you feel burned out. Several studies have established a positive link between travel and creativity. Adapting to new cultures, which occurs frequently and inevitably while travelling, can be powerful enough to stimulate creativity. A personality and social psychology study observed that living abroad can accelerate a process known as intercultural learning, which helps you to handle issues in new ways, raise environmental awareness, and reduce rigidity – all of which are great for nurturing creativity.

  1. Build mental resilience

Travelling or relocating to an exciting and intimidating location can help toughen you up emotionally and psychologically. Facing challenges in an unfamiliar environment and dealing with new faces encourages you to learn to adjust to life and leave your comfort zone. This increases your adaptability, patience, and emotional fortitude.

Travel may provide distinct advantages as a healthy way to manage and improve your mental health. It could be worth looking into if you have considered tourism as a way to enhance your quality of life.
