Top Tips for Boosting Your Child’s Confidence

21 November 2021 by threewords

Confidence gives children the self-belief needed to push themselves outside of their comfort zone and try something new. Essential for exploring life to the fullest. We have paired up with a prep school in Buckinghamshire to share some top tips for boosting your child’s confidence.

Practice Makes Perfect

What gives children confidence is the ability to complete a task and the evidence that they are capable. To help build your child’s confidence, try getting them to practice ahead of a task. This might be getting them to do a mock exam paper, a dry run of their school performance or similar small goals that they can achieve. This will give them the ‘evidence’ that they need to believe they can do what they put their mind to.

Praise

Self-belief doesn’t come from anywhere. It is fostered. The words that you choose to use to talk to your child can have a huge impact on their outlook on life and how they view themselves. To help your child to be confident, praise them for their achievements no matter how small.

Making Room for Mistakes

We all make them and it’s what makes us human. By giving your child the freedom and space to make their own mistakes and learn from them, you can raise a confident child. Children that are given freedom in this way are reportedly less stressed and anxious which can help them to be more confident versions of themselves.

Making Friends

Having a supportive circle of friends can give your child a sense of belonging and help them with their self-identity. This can be a source of insecurity for children as they try to find out who they are. It can make the idea of failing less scary as they have a group of friends to turn to. It’s important for families to also do the same and act as a support network to reassure their children that things are going to be okay.

Explore Self Love

Work with your child to get them to accept and love what makes them unique. Remind your child of how beautiful and amazing they are to help them to internalise this and embrace the beauty of their flaws. Encourage them to take care of themselves and to look after their mind through exploring self-care. This might be through meditation, spending time with their friends, baking or anything else that brings them comfort and joy.
