The Importance of English Literature Lessons in Schools

1 June 2023 by threewords

With how many subjects there are on offer at school, it becomes very easy for many great ones to fall to the very bottom of the pile. One of the subjects that goes unnoticed, is English literature. In fact, this subject has a lot more to offer than perceived. There is much more to English literature than pieces of text. These lessons have a special place when it comes to shaping young minds and opening up a world of possibilities. Through the exploration of stories, poems, and plays that are written by talented and well-known authors, students begin to develop empathy, pick up life skills, and a deeper understanding of historical views. Here is some advice from this alternative school in London, on the importance of English literature lessons in schools.

Enhancing language skills

Whilst students will learn the bulk of their vocabulary and pick up their language skills throughout their younger years, literature lessons are well known for teaching students how to express themselves in an articulate manner, using captivating words and phrases. English literature lessons help students improve their language skills in both a fun and engaging way. Through endless amounts of reading and studying different texts, students encounter new words, learn how to use grammar correctly and understand how to use sentence structures effectively. This exposure alone works on expanding their vocabulary, strengthening their writing skills, and improving their overall communication.

Imagination and creativity

Reading literature may not seem like much at first, but it allows students to embark on an exciting journey in their minds. Reading stories, and engaging with characters in different settings helps to stimulate their imagination, which aids in the development of their creative thinking skills. By exploring different worlds and perspectives through literature lessons, students become a lot more open-minded and curious about the world around them. They begin to visualise vivid descriptions, empathise with the emotions of characters, and even create their own stories, which helps to foster a love for creativity and self-expression.

Builds empathy

Writing has an incredible ability to make individuals feel and understand the experiences of others. English literature lessons expose students to a wide range of characters with different backgrounds, cultures and life situations. By reading about their struggles, successes and emotions, students begin to learn how to empathise with others. They also gain a deeper understanding of different perspectives from different times in history. This empathy and understanding can positively influence their relationships and interactions with those in their lives.

It is clear why English literature is so important, and a staple part of the academic curriculum. By engaging with this subject, students will be able to develop several skills that will stay and benefit them for life.
