Children love it because they can learn about how different the world once was and cool topics like mummification, the invention of chocolate and much more. History teaches children about themselves in a way. They get to learn about their ancestors and the lives that their relatives once lived. In addition to learning about who they are and where they came from, they will also have the chance to explore other cultures and learn about their contributions to the world which can help develop their respect for those different to their own.

The decisions we make shape our future. History teaches children about how the past led us to where we are today. There is lots that we have to be grateful for, like our freedom to vote, access to free education and healthcare and modern-day medicine. The world has come a long way and learning about how these exact changes came about and what life was once like can make children a little more appreciative of the things that they have.

Much of what we know about the past is through stories that have been shared over the years, ancient artefacts, and other pieces of evidence. To ascertain the truth, in history we must be critical which can help children with their critical thinking.

While it has influenced a lot and for the better, not all of what’s happened throughout history was right. Learning about these events can however help children in developing an understanding of right and wrong and learn important lessons from the past.

Questioning Themselves and Making Better Choices

It also encourages children to ask the question “so what?” and teaches them that there are consequences for their actions. Whether deciding to go to war, helping an ally or choosing to do nothing at all, all decisions made in the past have in some way led to where we are today.

History is a subject that others in the curriculum rely on, like English for example that sometimes includes historical context. It aligns different subjects across the curriculum and can help them in their learning.
