Top Tips for Helping Your Child with Maths

13 January 2022 by threewords

While for some children it’s easy to develop their skills in maths, there are some kids that really struggle with the subject and need a helping hand in certain areas. Whether it’s homework, picking up areas that your child has fallen behind in or preparing for an exam, parents should be on hand to help them in their studies where they can. Here are some top tips you can use to help your child as recommended by this independent school in Hampshire.

Sound positive about maths

Hated doing maths when you were in school? Regardless of your overall feelings of how you enjoyed or disliked maths, you should try to put them aside to allow your child to focus. A child that continually hears “I hated maths when I was in school”, or “I never did well in maths.” Radiate positivity when it comes to all studies!

Show your child how much maths is around them everyday

There’s a lot of chances for your child to be tested on their maths skills when they’re out and about. Grabbing a coffee and a hot chocolate together can instantly test a child’s skills in addition and sums. Cooking requires a lot of measuring ingredients that can help a child understand how much is needed to perfect a recipe. Shopping trips are also a great way of allowing children to practice quick maths sums together to get them in the groove of regular maths challenges.

Use maths games to make learning fun

Got a long car journey ahead of you and the family? You can use this to your advantage by preparing some games you can use to keep your child engaged throughout the journey. You can use apps, add and subtract games on your journey each time you pass a road sign and look at measuring speed by using division or fractions.

With every attempt, ensure to praise your child

Maths, for a lot of children, is not easy. Others can pick up sums, addition and times tables very easily, but for others, it’s a chore and you can’t force your child to love their experience. You can however praise your child for any amount of effort they do. It’s a huge boost to a child’s confidence because of it, and it gives them the boost they may need to improve their performance and feel motivated to do as best they can. Praise for effort is always better than their overall school performance.
