When it comes to moving house, it can easily become a very stressful event. In fact, after the death of a loved one and divorce, it is the next most stressful life event that exists. However, it doesn’t always have to be. There are many things you can do to make this far less stressful. If you are wise and plan ahead, you can make moving a breeze.
Planning
It is all about planning – and planning early at that. If you want a lot of stress and problems, then leave everything to the last minute. However, by planning early, you will be able to get your choice of removal firm on a date that suits you, get all the required bureaucracy sorted, and make great swathes when it comes to decluttering and packing. You may even be able to get those items you are unsure about keeping packed away safely in a self storage unit while you decide if you can live without them. It also makes it far easier to arrange the new house with fewer items cluttering up your new space.
The Paperwork
Unfortunately, moving does involve a lot of paperwork. You need to change addresses and stop payment schemes, read the meters, turn the water off at the stop cock, etc. So it may be useful to create a moving home checklist. Include in it everything that needs to be done. All the utility companies you need to talk to, all the contracts you need to cancel or move to your new property, etc. You may even need to write down what needs specialist cleaning, like carpet cleaning, and get quotes ahead of time. Having everything on a list makes it far easier to get going. You will be able to see what you have done by ticking items off and easily see what needs to be done. ,
Pack Ahead of Time
The longer you have been in your current home, the more you will have accumulated. You need to begin the packing process way ahead of time. It may be advisable to go through those drawers you never dare venture in anymore and get rid of everything that is old, in need of repair, and no longer used. Time gives you that opportunity to really decide if you want and/or need something. If you leave things to the last possible moment, all you will do is move a whole load of unwanted items.
After you’ve gone through everything then make sure you make a comprehensive house moving checklist so that you can plan everything properly and make life easier for yourself.
Once you have decluttered, you can begin packing correctly using the right boxes and wrapping to protect your property.
Have an Essentials Bag
You do not want to be hunting through all your packed boxes and cases every time you need something. To avoid this, the best thing to do is pack an essentials bag. Having everything from clothing, toiletries, toilet roll, chargers and anything else you use regularly. Also think about things you may want as soon as you move into the new house, like a kettle and coffee – perhaps these need to be packed in an essentials box.
