4 Things That Date Your Home (And How to Fix Them)

19 January 2023 by threewords

If you are concerned that your home is looking a little dated then you will know how frustrating this can be. You may feel that selling it is going to be difficult and that you will have to spend thousands to get it looking great again. This is not the case at all, in fact, sometimes a few simple tweaks are all you need to make in order to turn things around.

Old Window Treatments

Heavy fabric, fringed trims and roller shades don’t belong in this century. If you have dirty or cracked blinds then this will also be making your home look incredibly dated. If you know that privacy is not an issue then it is a good idea for you to let the view speak for itself. Need some privacy? Then investing in some modern shades is the way to go. You can also hang some horizontal blinds. If curtains are more your style then just make sure that they are nice and lightweight.

Floor-to-Ceiling Mirrors

Floor-to-ceiling mirrors do look incredibly dated and they really are the last thing you need in your home if you are going for the high-end, modern look. A lot of people opt for mirrors like this because they feel as though it makes their home look bigger,  and although this is the case, you have to remember that it can also really impact your home’s style. If you want to work around this, then simply opt for a nice big-picture window instead. Vaulted ceilings can also make your home look way bigger, so it’s important to keep that in mind. Options like this do tend to be more expensive when compared to hanging a mirror but are well worth it.

Dated and Busy Wallpaper

It doesn’t matter whether you have rabbits in baskets, flowers or a very busy pattern because nothing will make your home look more dated than having old wallpaper. If you want to break out of this box then you need to remove the wallpaper you have and opt for something that is trending right now. There are some very fun wall designs that can help to bring your home into the present day. Consider faux finishes and stripes. If you want to upgrade your furniture then why not look into things such as metal furniture legs? This is a great way for you to upcycle without having to spend a fortune on new furniture.

Glass Block Bathrooms

Glass block showers are truly old, and they were very popular during the 1990s. If you want to make sure that you let a lot of light into your bathroom then one thing you can do is try and invest in a skylight. When you have a skylight you will soon see that it is easier than ever for you to get a level of privacy without you having to worry about dating your space. Frosted windows are also great here if you wanted to opt for something a little more affordable.
