What Skills Will My Child Develop at Nursery?

26 May 2023 by threewords

Sending a child to nursery is definitely an exciting but nerve-wracking milestone for a parent. This is because this is the first time your child will be apart from you for long periods of time, exploring a space that is very new to them. Whilst you may already be aware that nurseries offer students the chance to play, make friends and learn in a safe and nurturing environment, there are also a handful of other things you may not have been informed on, such as the skills your child will pick up and develop during their time spent at nursery. Below is a blog that goes into more detail on the various skills that your child will acquire whilst at nursery, as advised by this nursery in North London.

Social skills

Nursery is the place to be for little ones when it comes to developing their social skills. This is due to the fact that nursery provides a rich social environment, where children can learn to interact and communicate with both their peers and teachers. For some children, this is the first time that they are exposed to such a diverse group of people, so social skills are usually the first change parents see in their little one. Through play and group activities, little ones will be able to develop essential social skills such as sharing, taking turns, cooperating and overcoming conflicts. These experiences alone will help to lay the foundation for healthy relationships and enhance their ability to work well when it comes to being part of a team.

Cognitive skills

At nursery, infants are provided with a range of activities and academic materials that help stimulate their cognitive development. From building blocks and puzzles to number games and story time sessions, all of these activities help to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and memory retention. The environment at nursery alone, encourages little ones to explore and learn about the world around them, which helps to foster curiosity and a love for learning.

Emotional development

Nursery provides a nurturing environment where children have the chance to learn how to manage their emotions and develop emotional resilience. Through play and interactions with their peers, they explore a number of different feelings and learn how to identify and express their emotions in a healthy way.

It is clear how much nursery has to offer little ones, and how it plays a crucial role in child development. The skills acquired during this time, help to lay the foundation for their future growth and learning. Embrace this stage of your child’s journey, and watch how they flourish during their time at nursery.
