How to Instil a Growth Mindset in Your Child

16 May 2023 by threewords

Those who have had the pleasure of raising a little human will understand and be aware of the joy that they see in their child’s eyes when they learn how to sit up, clap their hands and practice words in order to communicate with their loved ones. The thing to note is that children at this age have no concern or fear when it comes to success and failure. Instead, they are completely fascinated by what their body can do in the world around them, a mindset that helps them to grow and develop.

Unfortunately, this mindset is difficult to find in most grown children as by this point, they now struggle with the fear of failure. However, learning to do something new should always be approached with positivity. And that’s what a growth mindset is all about. Keep reading for some advice from this private school in Battersea on how to instil this in your child.

What is a growth mindset?

Before we begin on ways to get there, we need to establish what a growth mindset is. It is essentially a mindset that surrounds our abilities and intelligence. Someone who focuses on their growth is a person who has the ability to change their future for the better. This has become more important than ever to instil in the younger generation, as it has become a norm for them to get stuck in their mindsets, which not only limits their opportunities but keeps them from reaching their full potential.

Be a great role model

A growth mindset is something that needs to be reinstated and encouraged over a period of time. However, the real first step lies with you, their parent. Children see their parents as their biggest role models, which is why you will notice them mimicking your words and actions as they grow up. It would be wise to take advantage of this phase in a little one’s life by demonstrating and practising a growth mindset yourself. By simply showing your child that obstacles are nothing to be afraid of, they will begin to approach life more confidently.

Show them the value of learning

Your child needs to understand how rewarding the act of learning can be, especially the long-term benefits. You can help your little one by giving them examples of times that you struggled but realised that obstacles were only a learning curve and a stepping stone to success.

Establishing a growth mindset in your child is all about letting them make mistakes, to understanding that there is nothing to fear. Remind your child that they are in control of what happens to their life, it’s just about how much effort they decide to put in.
