How to Identify Your Child’s Learning Style

11 May 2023 by threewords

Children are born curious, with a never-ending thirst for exploring and wanting to learn more about the world around them. However, when it comes to the nitty gritty, and deep analysis of each child, you will come to notice that each child learns in their own way. As they grow, they begin to develop a learning style that becomes more noticeable the older they get. This learning pattern can be easily identified by parents and teachers, with it playing a massive role in how well a child does in their education. There are three main learning styles to be aware of: kinaesthetic, visual and auditory. At first, your child may seem as though they practice a little of each, but over time you will notice them leaning towards the one that suits them the most. Here are some tips from this private school in Dublin, on how to identify your child’s learning style.

Kinaesthetic learning style

Kinaesthetic learners are well known for preferring physical methods to understand and acquire new information. Their preferred way of learning is by touching, feeling and doing the task. As infants, you may notice that they like to use their fingers to count and enjoy making gestures when they are speaking or singing a song. They generally have good hand-eye coordination and take a strong liking towards physical activities such as sports and dancing. As a baby, you will notice this learner being quite active, and showing early signs of walking. Activities such as building blocks and constructing models will be something they prefer amongst the rest.

Visual learning style

Visual learning is exactly what it is perceived as; individuals preferring to observe the world around them in order to learn. Children who lean towards this learning style enjoy reading books and usually prefer learning using pictures and videos. You will notice them paying heavy attention to photographs, paintings and illustrations, with there being a higher attraction to bright colours and patterns. They usually have a deep love for art and have an extremely vivid imagination.

Auditory learning style

Auditory learners like to use auditory tools to learn and take in information. These learners are usually great listeners and have great rhythm when it comes to sound and music. They tend to understand information and directions better when they’re given to them orally. If your child has an auditory learning style, you will notice that they have a keen interest in learning new languages and a sharp ear when it comes to determining sounds.

It is important to recognise your child’s learning style as early on as possible, as it plays a big role when it comes to moulding a child’s education and helping them achieve their goals.
