Fun and Interesting Facts About Ireland That Will Make You Want to Book a Flight

18 November 2024 by threewords

When thinking of European countries, Ireland might not be the first destination that comes to your mind, but this nation is a true hidden gem that is definitely worth your time. If you want to find out more about it, here are some cool facts about Ireland that will spike your interest!

The beloved holiday of Saint Patrick’s Day originated in Ireland, and it honours the patron saint of the country. It is celebrated every year on March 17th, not only on the Emerald Isle but far beyond its borders as well, by organising parades and wearing green.

If you are afraid of snakes, Ireland might be the best place for you! Ireland is one of the few countries in the world where there are no snakes. According to legends, it was St. Patrick who banned them from the island, but the more plausible explanation would be that the climate of the Emerald Isle has always been too cold for these reptiles to live there.

The Irish have always been highly regarded thanks to their unique craftsmanship and the beautiful goods that they produce. To this day, Aran knit sweaters, home blessings, tweed accessories, and other Irish items are some of the best in the world, making a wonderful addition to your house and wardrobe. Today, all these things can also be found in authentic online stores so that you can gift a beautiful Irish present to your friends, family, or yourself.

The weather in Ireland is known for how unpredictable it can be, and it is even said that the Irish can have four seasons in a day. Moreover, most days of the year, it is cold and humid, so if you plan on travelling to Ireland, make sure to pack some warm clothes and a trusty umbrella.

Ireland isn’t just about breathtaking landscapes and rich history – it’s also a haven for food lovers. Irish cuisine has come a long way from its humble beginnings, now offering a delightful mix of traditional recipes and contemporary culinary innovation. Classic dishes like Irish stew, soda bread, and colcannon are a must-try for any visitor, while the country’s vibrant seafood scene showcases fresh catches like oysters, mussels, and salmon, especially along the Wild Atlantic Way.

For those looking to elevate their dining experience, Ireland also boasts an array of fantastic venues for private group dining. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply seeking an intimate meal in a unique setting, Square Meal IE is the perfect platform to discover the best options. From historic buildings to modern eateries, you’ll find venues that pair incredible Irish food with unforgettable atmospheres.

Ireland is the birth country of many talented actors who played a big role in the film industry. Some of the most famous actors and actresses include Liam Neeson, Cillian Murphy, Saoirse Ronan, and Colin Farrell.

There are over 30,000 castles and castle ruins scattered across Ireland, which makes it the dream destination for those interested in history and Medieval architecture. While some castles have long become ruins, others were transformed into hotels or museums where you can easily spend a day during your stay.

The Hook Lighthouse in County Wexford, Ireland, is the oldest operating lighthouse in the world! It has been more than 800 years since this lighthouse started helping sailors safely arrive at their destinations.

Although the actions in the beloved book Dracula take place in Transylvania, Bram Stoker actually wrote this novel in Dublin. To this day, Dracula is one of the most famous books in the world and a true masterpiece of Irish literature.

If you like Halloween, you probably already know that this holiday originates from the Celts, the ancestors of the Irish. In Celtic tradition, the holiday was called Samhain, and it marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.

One of the greatest national treasures of Ireland is the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript and Gospel book in Latin that dates back to around 800 AD. This book is a true masterpiece of Medieval art that has survived for centuries regardless of the hardships that the Irish had to go through.
