Sun, Fun and Food: Travel Tips For Foodies!

26 August 2022 by threewords

If you’re a self-confessed foodie, then travel will always give you the chance to sample some new delicious eats! Food enables us to understand and appreciate different cultures, so as well as being tasty it’s also a fantastic learning opportunity. But you might be wondering how you can get the very best out of each trip when it comes to food, rather than just turning up and hoping you will stumble across the best food that the destination offers. If you’re due to go away soon or are in the planning phases of your next trip, here are a few things to bear in mind.

Go to a top foodie destination

Some places in the world are known for their fantastic food, so if you want to be sure of a great eating experience then it’s worth seeking out these destinations. According to BBC Good Food, their top ten foodie tourist destinations are:

  • Ireland
  • France
  • Mexico
  • The Netherlands
  • Malta
  • Morocco
  • Israel
  • Scotland
  • Porto
  • Spain

Of course, it all depends on your preferences and the kinds of foods you most enjoy, but these will give you a starting point for your research if you’re not sure where to begin. If sampling different foods is the number 1 must-have for your trip then it makes sense to visit a destination that’s known for its tasty flavours, excellent ingredients, innovative cooking styles and all round great cuisine. While every place in the world will surely have something interesting to offer when it comes to food, you’ll definitely find it easier to find great eats in certain destinations.

Book a food tour

Once you’ve decided on a location, why not go a step further and book a food tour? This could be anything from a guided restaurant or wine tour, to cooking classes. Having the assistance of an expert and someone that knows the area ensures you don’t miss anything important. For example, Paris food tours would guide you around all of the local gastronomies and cheese shops, bakeries and chocolate shops. Perhaps you want to tour something specific, like sustainable food shops and eateries? A guided tour can take out the hassle and be a huge highlight of your trip.

Do some research

If you don’t want to go down the guided tour route, or can’t find anything suitable for your destination then it’s worth doing some extra research. Often, the best eateries are tucked away, chances are they’re places the locals themselves eat at so might be a little off the beaten track away from the more touristy places. To get the most out of your time away so you’re not searching when you arrive, do some research ahead of time. Join Facebook groups and browse forums for those that are knowledgeable about the area you’re going to. Ask for recommendations as you might stumble across places you’d never have known existed.

Buy your own ingredients

Once you arrive at your destination, why not buy some ingredients and enjoy cooking yourself? You could visit local markets and shops and purchase some exotic, flavourful and interesting ingredients and have fun experimenting with them. There’s no shortage of recipes and tutorials online and all of the information you could need for cooking different things safely. It is important to bear in mind health considerations, take water for example. If you’re in a place in the world where the water isn’t safe to drink then washing things like salads and fruit in it can also pose a hazard, so you’d use bottled water. Be careful of wet markets or anywhere that could potentially pose a health risk, as many countries in the world won’t have the same health and safety measures in place as you’re used to. Again, find out information online before you go, if you deem it safe enough and if the place you’re staying in has cooking facilities it’s well worth giving this a go. Otherwise, you could purchase a disposable barbeque and grill at the beach or anywhere else it’s permitted.

Have you ever travelled to a destination specifically for the food? Where did you go, and where are you hoping to go to next?
